England; 15th century More than 50 medieval tin badges in the shape of hearts have been found in London, most of them on the banks of the Thames. Many of them are decorated with hearts bordered with artificial pearls. Some, like this one, were decorated with a scroll in the form of a ribbon with the lover's message "herte be trew" ("the heart must be faithful"). It was probably a sign of love that was presented to a loved one as a gift.
